Jim Kohlmoos

Vice President

Jim Kohlmoos

With an impressive career in education, government, and nonprofit leadership, Jim Kohlmoos started out in 1972 as a teacher trainer for the U.S. Peace Corps in Malaysia. He is the co-founder and principal of EDGE Consulting Partners, a consulting boutique in Arlington, Virginia focusing on policy, strategy, advocacy, and innovation in education. Jim currently is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a senior advisor to the National Network for Education Research Practice partnership, and a consultant for numerous education-oriented nonprofit organizations and philanthropies.

With more than five decades of experience in education leadership, Kohlmoos supports new and innovative approaches in policy development, organizational management, research and development, coalition building, marketing, and evaluation.

Prior to founding EDGE in 2013, Jim was executive director of the National Association of State Boards of Education, a non-partisan nonprofit membership association, where he led a national effort to support informed and active lay citizen participation in state level education policy making.

As the president and CEO of Knowledge Alliance from 2001 to 2012, Jim guided a national advocacy program to expand support for evidence-based education and knowledge-based solutions in school improvement and policy.

From 1993 to 2000 Kohlmoos served in the Clinton-Gore Administration at the U.S. Department of Education as a deputy assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education and as a senior policy adviser. He also served on the Clinton-Gore Presidential Transition Team in 1992.

A native of California, Jim Kohlmoos holds a Baccalaureate Degree in History from Stanford University and now resides in Arlington, Virginia and Leadville with his wife, Ruth, the co-founder of EDGE.

Jim commented, “I am excited to roll up the sleeves and try to help out as best I can as a new board member.”
